Autism and Special Needs Registry

The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office has created a voluntary Special Needs Registry available to all citizens of Raleigh County. It aims to help emergency service personnel provide better assistance to residents with special needs during an emergency. The registry contains vital information such as emergency contact information, physical description, current photograph of the registrant, and details of their disability. The primary goal of the registry is to ensure that all residents with special needs receive the help and support they need during emergency situations or interactions with Law Enforcement, Fire, or EMS personnel.

It’s important to note that the information provided to the registry will only be shared with first responders during an emergency or for the purpose of planning an emergency response. The registry’s information can help in several ways. For instance, Raleigh County Emergency Services dispatchers will be aware that someone at the location is on the registry when they are dispatched to a residence. Deputies and first responders will be notified that there may be someone at the location with special needs so that they can better gauge their respective responses.

In case a person with special needs is reported missing, first responders will have current and vital information that will aid in locating the missing person more expeditiously. In an emergency, time is of the essence. A person can register themselves or be registered by a caretaker or loved one, and there is no cost to register for the Special Needs Registry.

Project Lifesaver

Project Lifesaver is a proactive search and rescue program that utilizes radio tracking technology to locate persons with cognitive disabilities (such as Autism, Alzheimer’s, dementia, traumatic brain injury, etc.) who tend to wander from their care-givers.

Participants on the program are provided with a transmitter that is worn on their wrist or ankle. Each transmitter emits a unique radio frequency tracking signal. When a participant is reported missing, a specially trained Project Lifesaver search search-and-rescue team responds to the wanderer’s area with the mobile locator tracking system. In areas where this system has been used, search times have been reduced from hours or days — to minutes, which can mean the difference between life and death.
